Fresh produce from the farm is used for cooking, but how safe is the food we serve? On World Food Safety Day, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is taking an important step towards ensuring that safe and nutritious food can benefit all people and the planet.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), safe and nutritious food ensures people’s health and well-being. Everyone must work together to achieve safe food. Whether we grow, process, transport, store, sell, buy, prepare or serve food, food safety is in our hands.
Standards help food safety
Standards promote food quality and safety, as well as the efficiency of the food supply chain from farm to table, and help prevent diseases, detect germs and manage risk. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), through its ISO 22000 standard for food safety management systems, helps all types of food producers manage the safety of their products and the well-being of their consumers, providing certainty within the global food supply chain and helping people make reliable quality food choices.
Professionals with expertise in microbiology, risk assessment, food processing, regulatory compliance and other related fields should be encouraged to contribute to the ongoing development of the ISO 22000 standard. This is a unique opportunity to help shape the future of food safety and contribute to a healthier and safer global food system. Interested experts are invited to collaborate through their National Standards Body (members) with ISO in advancing food safety worldwide.
