Old traditional stoves are a major cause of air pollution and the deaths of millions of people worldwide.
New cooking options are safer, so ISO is advancing technology that can make efficient, low-pollution stoves a reality.
Imagine if cooking consumed a quarter of your income, destroyed forests and emitted toxic fumes into our homes and families.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has found that about 4 million people a year die prematurely from diseases caused by air pollution, caused by the inefficient use of solid fuels and kerosene for cooking.
Worldwide, about three billion people cook and warm themselves using ‘open fires’ or old stoves, which create huge amounts of air pollution.
These inefficient cooking options have been shown to lead to serious health problems, such as pneumonia, heart disease and stroke.
Through these efforts, ISO’s technical committee, ISO/TC 285, promotes clean and efficient cooking solutions for a common goal.
“It is important that communities have access to efficient, reliable and sustainable cookstoves that comply with the latest technology and standards,” says Richard Ebong, Chair-elect of ISO/TC 285. “But it is also essential that we work with cookstove manufacturers to continuously improve these products.”
