This standard defines a conceptual scheme for observations, for characteristics related to the observation process, and for characteristics related to sampling during observations. These provide models for the exchange of information describing observation acts and their results, both within and between different scientific and technical communities. Observations usually involve sampling of a final characteristic of interest. This standard defines a common set of sample types according to their spatial, material (for examples of ex situ observations) or statistical nature. The scheme includes the relationship between the characteristics of the samples (sub-sampling, extracted samples). This standard deals only with interfaces that are visible from the outside and does not impose any restrictions on the respective implementations beyond what is necessary to meet the specifications of the interfaces in the actual situation.
