Electric Scooter Safety Standard

E-scooters are becoming increasingly popular in cities around the world. They are a simple, fast and easy way to get around, and there is always room to park them. They are simple and easy to use, but not always safe, as in most cases, users are not required to have a driving license for them.

While the safe operation of e-scooters is a problem, another concern is their electrical safety. IEC Technical Committee TC 125 develops standards for transport devices that are powered by rechargeable batteries, are mounted on one or more wheels, and have their speed or direction controlled electronically. In IEC terminology, these are called electric transport vehicles. They include electric scooters and unicycles, but exclude electric bicycles, motorcycles or cars, as these are already covered by other technical committees, both in IEC and ISO.

The ISO Technical Committee TC 125 has published the series of standards, IEC 63281, which specify safety requirements and test methods for personal electronic transport vehicles. These standards help to increase the safety of electric scooters.

The standards of the IEC Technical Committee TC 125 include, but are not limited to: • electrical and mechanical safety;
• performance and durability;
• functional safety of electric scooters.
