Using QR Codes (Two-Dimensional Matrix Barcodes)

Uses of QR Codes (Two-Dimensional Matrix Barcodes)

QR codes have also been used for various purposes, from reading restaurant menus to using them on airplanes during flights. The use and prevalence of QR codes is on the rise, and some reports show that their use has increased by more than 200% in the past year alone.

The international QR code payment market is also booming and is predicted to reach a value of $35.07 billion by 2030.

QR codes (Two-Dimensional Matrix Barcodes) were originally created in 1994 to overcome the storage capacity limitations of simple barcodes and were initially used to identify parts in automobile manufacturing. With the development of QR barcode reading technology, as well as the production of smartphones and smart cameras, the use of QR codes has steadily increased year after year.

Nowadays, QR codes are everywhere; they are widely used in advertising, marketing, manufacturing, warehouse inventory management, ticketing and product labeling, etc. Recently, they have also been used to store bank account or credit card information, enabling payment via QR barcode. QR codes are also used to identify counterfeit products and for product traceability.

A QR code is a type of 2D matrix barcode that consists of symbols that form a group of square modules, organized in an overall square pattern with a white background and black modules.

In fact, there are four different models of QR code types:

  1. The first QR code model has basic specifications.

  2. The second QR code model is an improved form with additional features and its symbols are fully compatible with QR code reading systems.

  3. The QR code also has a modified version of the second model, which allows the symbols to be displayed in a mirror image.
  4. The micro QR code format allows for the representation of a smaller amount of data with a smaller symbol and is more suitable for direct marketing.

The QR code is the recommended model for new system applications. Recently, the international standard ISO/IEC 18004, which describes and details QR codes, has been updated.
