Building a healthy future with a cleaner environment

World Health Day reminds us that, in order to be healthy people, we must take care of a healthy planet.

For too long, health and environmental issues have been treated separately. Today, the importance of the link between a clean environment and human well-being is increasingly being recognized. The truth is that human health and environmental health are closely linked, so by improving one, we also improve the other.

In a time of epidemics, high pollution and the rise of diseases such as cancer, asthma and heart disease, we are at a crucial moment. Climate change and other environmental pollution factors constitute among the greatest threats to global health.

As we mark World Health Day 2025 with the theme “Our Planet, Our Health”, it is time to create a system that supports healthy people and a sustainable planet. This means acting today – reshaping the economy to be greener, lower carbon, resource-efficient and more inclusive.

Our existence is closely linked to a clean environment.

People need to create the conditions for a better life, in a world where clean air, safe drinking water and safe food are guaranteed for all. An economy that puts health and well-being at the centre of development and cities with healthy environments are essential. But this requires global cooperation, sustainable financing and serious tackling of environmental issues.

Every year, over 13 million deaths worldwide occur due to environmental pollution.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) aims to create a positive impact on the environment, society and economy through standards that contribute to a more sustainable future. With 75 years of experience in standards development, ISO is focused on providing solutions for a healthy society and effective action on climate change, raising global awareness.

With a growing portfolio of standards that support public health and climate action, ISO plays a key role in supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Its standards, trusted by governments, industry and consumers, are the foundation for a safer and healthier world.

On World Health Day 2025, let us join forces to build a healthy and prosperous future for all – while respecting the limits of our planet. The actions we take in this decade will be crucial, and standards can be the foundation for positive change towards a more sustainable world.
