There is a massive traffic of road and rail vehicles worldwide, transporting various goods that require refrigerated transport such as: fresh fruit, meat, flowers, vaccines, medical devices, chemicals. In order to be transported safely and to ensure that the goods retain their value, they must be kept at a constant controlled temperature in suitable vehicles with the necessary equipment.
Technical Committee CEN/TC 413 'Vehicles for the refrigerated transport of goods' plays a major role in the development of standards that ensure the quality of this equipment.
Recently, Technical Committee CEN/TC 413 published a new important standard in the field: EN 16440-2:2023 "Test methodologies for refrigerated equipment installed in vehicles - Part 2: Refrigerating equipment".
This European Standard specifies the test methodologies applicable to refrigeration equipment installed in insulated transport vehicles (such as trucks, trailers, carts, other transport vehicles and wagons). Thermal systems cover low temperatures and preserve goods, using a homogeneous mixture, which has a lower melting point than that of the food ingredients being transported. These devices are used in particular for the transport of foods such as ice cream.
The charging of eutectic elements from the liquid to the solid phase can be carried out either by a compressor/condenser unit mounted on the vehicle or by a direct or indirect stationary system. Eutectic refrigeration equipment is equipped with the necessary components for charging, transmission, cooling and/or temperature control devices.
The CEN EN 16440-2:2023 standard adds value to the European portfolio of standards needed to ensure that refrigerated goods are transported in the safest possible way.
