Standards: a common language for quality, innovation and sustainable development
Every year, on 14 October, the international standardization community celebrates World Standards Day, recognizing the contribution of experts, institutions and organizations working to develop and implement standards, which support economic development, technological progress and the well-being of society.
Standards create a common language between businesses, consumers, institutions and markets. They help improve the quality of products and services, increase safety, use resources more efficiently, protect the environment and strengthen trust in trading relationships. In an increasingly interconnected and digital economy, standards are also an important tool for innovation, digital transformation and competitiveness.
Standards at the service of business and national development
The General Directorate of Standardization (DGS), as the national standardization body in Albania, works for the adoption of European and international standards as Albanian Standards (AS), contributing to the approximation with the best international practices and supporting the European integration of the country.
For Albanian business, standards constitute practical tools for improving processes, increasing the reliability of products and services, meeting market demands and expanding trade opportunities. They give enterprises, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, the opportunity to improve performance and increase their competitiveness.
Aiming to make standards more accessible and closer to the needs of users, DGS is working on the modernization and digitalization of the standards database. An important step in this direction is the full translation into Albanian of the selected standards, facilitating the understanding and implementation of their requirements by Albanian businesses and professionals.
Through the support of the UNIDO GQSP project and the use of the TRADOS translation module, DPS has enabled the translation of important standards in areas such as inspection and certification, information security, gender equality, energy management, environmental protection and quality management. This support contributes to strengthening the institutional capacities of DPS and improving the access of Albanian business to European and international standards in the Albanian language.
Acknowledgements to the standardization community
The development of standardization is the result of the cooperation and expertise of many actors. On the occasion of World Standards Day, DPS expresses its appreciation and thanks to the experts, collaborators, members and chairmen of Technical Committees, as well as to all institutions and organizations that contribute to the development of the national standardization system.
A special thanks goes to the UNIDO GQSP project for its concrete contribution to the digitalization of the standards database and facilitating their translation into Albanian, supporting the modernization of DPS services and increasing their value for business.
On World Standards Day, DPS reiterates its commitment to a modern, accessible national standardization system in line with European and international developments, in the service of quality, innovation and competitiveness of Albanian business.
Happy World Standards Day!
